Your entry will not be accepted without payment. 

The entry will be considered submitted when payment and registration has been received.

 

OFFICIAL RULES

Payment will be made in one lump sum by wire transfer or check to winner. Wire transfer payment must be made to a U.S. bank (wire transfer fees may apply).  Taxes and fees are the responsibility of the winner. Payout will be made in U.S. Dollars.

Private boat registration is $150 Mahi Madness, for the entire lenght of the derby. All fish captured from your boat maybe submitted into the competition (all anglers can win cash and prizes by fishing from a registered boat. See our "upload your fish" section for instructions on how to submit your fish.)  ROD & REEL ONLY.



COMMERCIAL BOAT REGISTRATION

 

Commercial boat registration is $250 Mahi Madness for the entire lenght of the derby. All fish captured from your boat maybe submitted into the competition (all anglers can win cash and prizes by fishing from a registered boat. See our "upload your fish" section for instructions on how to submit your fish.) ROD & REEL ONLY

​​TYPE OF TOURNAMENT



This is an Angler/Boat Rod & Reel fishing derby, where the purse goes to the angler and or boat with the biggest fish, based on the following:​

1.     40% of registration fees collected will go to the angler.

2.    20% of registration fees collected from will go to the boat.​

3.    10 percent will go to a fund for Honokohau Harbor for beautification and repairs. 

4.    10 percent to a select charity.

5.    20 percent, for administration of the series.

No changes are permitted after registration has been submitted. All fish must be entered for official weigh-in at the Honokohau harbor by 4PM daily.

​RULES



The rules of this tournament may be amended in writing and on this website up to 24 hours prior to the start of the derby. Anglers & Boat representatives are responsible for being well informed of all rules.​ Notice may or may not be given. No rules shall be amended within 24 hours of any event or after any event has begun. 

1. This is a Rod and Reel fishing event.

BOUNDARIES



Pacific Ocean (West Hawaii Waters).​​​

ELIGIBLE FISH



Are those specific fish caught for which derby you are registered.

Only that specific species of fish is

eligible for cash or prizes. All fish presented for weigh-in must be:

1.      In fresh, edible condition

2.     Caught that tournament day.

3.     No mutilated fish (based on derby committee's opinion) will be accepted.

4.     Minimum acceptable weight of 10 pounds is required for entry into the tournament. (Marlin 250 lbs.)

5.     All Fish are subject to a random gill test, results will determine eligibility.

(All participating anglers are urged to release those fish not to be entered into the tournament. The  

release of fish should be in keeping with the best conservation methods to ensure continued life.)

THE LARGEST FISH WINS $ CASH $:​



Largest single Mahi Mahi, Ono, Ahi, or Marlin weighed in each respective derby series will win the largest fish category. The purse will be based on the level of entries, with 40 percent of all entry monies going to the angler of the biggest fish, 20 percent going to the registered boat that lands the largest fish. Both angler/boat will be added to the Kona Derby Series plaque.

(Note: this is the only $ cash $ prize category)​​​

​​​​LADIES' LARGEST FISH



Largest single Mahi Mahi, Ono, Ahi, or Marlin weighed in each respective derby series will win the ladies' largest fish category, which will be a sponsor’s prize.

JUNIOR LARGEST FISH 16 & under:



Largest single Mahi Mahi, Ono, Ahi, or Marlin weighed in each respective derby series will win the​ junior's largest fish category, which will be a sponsor’s prize.

SUBMITTING YOUR FISH INTO THE DERBY​



All entries must be weighed at the Honokohau harbor scale or called in by no later than 4PM each day. A scale fee of $5 will be due. You must submit a copy of your weight ticket and a digital photo (Max Size 1MB) by no later than 7PM at the Marina Deli & General store. Located right there at the dock or at the Charter Desk.

COMMUNICATIONS



All participating boats should be equipped with a working VHF marine radio and or cellular phone. The derby staff will monitor VHF channel 67. Official or special notifications will be announced during the derby on this channel as needed. ​NO WEIGH-IN STATISTICS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON VHF RADIO.​

​DERBY HOURS



12:01AM – 4PM, all fish captured between these hours must be brought to the weigh in scale by no later than 4PM. Fish being fought at lines out times must be announced over Channel 67 and weighed in no later 5PM
 

​​WEATHER CONDITIONS

Captains are ultimately responsible for their crew and should make the decision as to safe sea conditions.

No refunds will be allowed.

​​PROTESTS



Any protests concerning the conduct of an angler or rules, or violations thereof, must be filed in writing with the derby committee by no later than 7PM on the day of the alleged violation or dispute at the Marina Deli & General Store located there at the fuel dock. A decision will be made (by the derby committee) and all decisions shall be final.

TIES



In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by the earliest weigh-in time, including date of catch.​​ In this case a sponsor's prize will be awarded to all fish deemed tied.

REFUNDS



No refunds will be given after the start of the derby or within 24 hours to the start of the derby or unless there is no fish caught that meets the regulations of the derby. 

​RELEASE OF LIABILITY



It is expressly understood that all participants in the Kona Derby Series waive any and all claims of liability for any of its events, and enter' at their own risk, and that the Kona Derby Series or Konaco Specialties Inc., their officers, and directors, and all persons connected directly or indirectly with the operations of the derby, or any sponsor of the derby, or any participant of the derby shall be exempt from any liability for slander, loss, damage, negligence, harm, injury or death suffered by any participant, entrant, sport-fisherman or their companions, boat captains, mates, crew members, guests, vessels and equipment which may occur during the competitions.​

BY REGISTERING and PAYING FEES



By registering and paying your entry fees,  "You" the angler, and or boat representative agrees to follow the above derby rules and that you understand the terms and conditions of these rules. By entering this derby series you agree to RELEASE us of any, and all claims of liability as described above, and that the Kona Derby Series and/or it's sponsors may use without payment or restriction any photographs or video in which he or she appears or provided to us for any purpose whatsoever, and not limited to resale, advertising, commercial or promotional material. Any and all such material submitted becomes sole exclusive property of the Kona Derby Series, including all copyright entitlements.
